บทคัดย่อ/คำอธิบาย :

Theoretical syntactic models for generation, recognition and analysis of non-linear structures such as digitized images or pictures, provide formal tools for problems related to pattern recognition, image processing and picture analysis, due to their structure handling ability. Research on 2D languages, consisting of digitized picture arrays, continues to be of potential interest. Recently, a new two-dimensional grammar, called pure 2D context-free grammar, for rectangular picture array generation, was introduced in the work [K.G. , Subramanian et aI., Pure 2D Picture grammars and Languages, Discrete Applied Mathematics, 157(16) , 2009, 3401-3411]' The related problem of reconstruction ofa black and white binary image, has been a topic of intensive investigation in the area of Discrete Tomography. The research in this project adopted the methods and techniques oftwo-dimensional grammar theory and discrete image reconstruction theory. The major goals of the proposed project were to explore further the generative capabilities ofthe two-dimensional Grammar models, especially, the pure 2D context-free grammar model, to examine the power of these picture grammars in image generation by using regulating mechanisms, to employ in the 2D models, the concepts of a pattern grammar and accepting grammar studied in formal language theory, to incorporate the key features such as the notion of splicing developed in DNA computing models and use the techniques of P systems in membrane computing and to explore possible applications in problems such as Character Recognition. The project proposed algorithms for reconstruction of binary images, when additional constraints are imposed.
